Rev. Dr. Theophilus Bamfo Dankwa, popularly known as T. B. Dankwa, was a pioneering Christian leader whose ministry played a foundational role in the development of the Ghana Fellowship of Evangelical Students (GHAFES). Born on 20 February 1944 in Mpraeso, Kwahu, Rev. Dankwa attended Achimota School before proceeding to the University of Ghana, where he studied Chemistry and graduated with a BSc (Special) degree. During his university years, he was actively involved in the University Christian Fellowship and served as its President in his final year. After obtaining a postgraduate diploma in education from the University of Cape Coast, he taught Chemistry at Prempeh College from 1967 to 1971, where he also served as Head of the Chemistry Department. In 1971, he joined the emerging national student movement, taking over from Gottfried Osei-Mensah and becoming its first national staff worker. This movement later became known as GHAFES in 1975. As one of the pioneers of GHAFES, Rev. Dankwa was deeply committed to evangelism, discipleship, missions, and student leadership development. He played a significant role in laying a strong foundation for missions through the training and mobilisation of students for evangelistic outreaches on campuses and in communities. His influence extended beyond Ghana. He served with the International Fellowship of Evangelical Students (IFES) and was involved in strengthening student movements and Christian ministry across Africa. His ministry also contributed to the development of emerging student movements in countries such as Sierra Leone and Liberia. In pastoral ministry, Rev. Dankwa served as the lead minister of Korle-Bu Community Chapel, formerly Accra Chapel, for about 12 years. He was also involved in the leadership of several Christian organisations, serving as Board Chairman of Pioneers Ghana, World Vision International Ghana, and the Ghana Evangelism Committee. Rev. Dankwa's life was marked by a deep commitment to Christian ministry, missions, leadership development, and the discipling of young people. His contribution to the early development of GHAFES and the wider student ministry movement in Africa remains significant. He passed away in 2022, leaving behind a legacy of faithful Christian service, mentorship, and investment in generations of Christian leaders. GHAFES continues to honour his legacy through the annual T. B. Dankwa Memorial Lecture and Missions Fund. Rev. Dr. Theophilus Bamfo Dankwa remains a foundational figure in the history of GHAFES—one whose life embodied the call to know Christ and make Him known.
